New R.E.M. Album to Feature Patti Smith, Eddie Vedder, Peaches

Just a few days after details surfaced about the Decemberists album to which Peter Buck lent his talents, R.E.M. has announced a few guest stars of its own.

Collapse Into Now, the band’s 15th studio album, will feature guest vocals from Patti Smith, Eddie Vedder and Peaches.

While a full tracklist is still unavailable, Mike Mills recently told Spin that Smith will sing on the album’s closing track, “Blue.” Vedder will lend his voice to a song called “It Happened Today,” and Peaches will appear on an as-yet-untitled track that Mills said will eventually have the word “alligator” in the title.

Mills also said that the follow-up to 2008’s Accelerate is a “very personal, very human record. Not only to Michael [Stipe], but personal and human in the sense of the narrative of the songs, the protagonists of the songs.”
