The Decemberists Reveal New Album Artwork, Conan Performance

As we inch closer and closer to that Jan. 18 release date for The Decemberists’ The King is Dead album, we’ve got a few more details for eager fans.

In addition to unveiling that nifty album artwork (pictured), the group has announced that it will perform on Conan on Nov. 18. Colin Meloy and company will play the record’s first single, “Down by the Water” (which you can download for free here) on the show.

Meloy said that this record has more of an American influence than earlier Decemberists material. “Over the last eleven years or so, since I moved to Portland, I feel like I’ve been mining mostly English traditions for influence,” he said in a statement. “I guess I’ve kind of come back to a lot of the more American music that got me going in the first place – R.E.M. and Camper Van Beethoven and all these bands that borrowed from more American traditions like Neil Young and the Byrds.”

You can pre-order The King is Dead here beginning Nov. 22.
