MTV recently announced that they are developing a digital music awards show expected to debut this spring. The cable channel already plays host to its own European Music Awards, Movie Awards and the Video Music Awards.
The awards show will not be televised, but will be available for streaming on devices (smartphones, computers, tablets) that can connect to the internet. Nominees will be chosen for their digital contributions to the music industry; best tweet, best app and best blog are just some the award categories that may be included in the event. Although details for the show are still being developed, performances and audience participation are slated to be essential aspects of the event.
“The [music] industry has evolved into a digital medium, and fans have evolved right along with it. So we figured it was time to re-examine how we reward achievement in these new mediums,” Dermot McCormack, executive VP of digital media, MTV Networks Music and Logo Group, said in a statement.
