J. Edgar, the biopic based on the life of the inaugural director of the FBI and alleged cross-dresser, J. Edgar Hoover, already had quite a cast. Now, Naomi Watts is joining its ranks.
Watts will play the role of Helen Gandy, according to Variety. Collider reports the role was initially offered to Charlize Theron.
Gandy was Hoover’s secretary for 54 years (1918-1972), and he called her services “indispensable.” She was allegedly in on all of Hoover’s more illicit work, including wire taps and blackmail.
In addition to Watts, J. Edgar, has an impressive cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio (Hoover), Armie Hammer (Clyde Tolson), Josh Lucas (Charles Lindbergh), Ed Westwick (Agent Smith) and Judi Dench (Anne Marie Hoover).
Clint Eastwood will direct the script written by Dustin Lance Black, who penned Milk, which won the Oscar for Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.
