The world’s first iPad-only newspaper will see the light of day on Wednesday. The Daily will operate much in the same way that newspapers are currently presented online: covering general news and culture stories complete with video from journalists working at various news agencies.
Apple plans to use the release of the iPad-publication as a guinea pig for its new content plan to sell subscriptions for 99 cents. Depending on the success of the model, The Daily could be a look at the future of monetizing online journalism. If Apple’s previous accomplishments aren’t convincing enough, the fact that the project is helmed by News Corp.’s Rupert Murdoch should be.
The Daily intends to remain “centrist and pragmatic” in its politics while promoting an “optimistic, populist stance” on its op/ed page in an effort to cater to the young, tech-savvy audience that is the target market for the newspaper.
Whether or not iPad users will take to the idea of paying for tablet subscription news is still up in the air, but with Apple and Murdoch pioneering the content-delivery system, the odds are in their favor.
