Activision Cancels Guitar Hero Franchise

It seems as if the war of music games is finally over. Activision announced today that it has cancelled the Guitar Hero franchise, ceding control of the genre to Harmonix studio’s Rock Band.

The studio cited a decline of interest in the music-game genre, as well as a desire to focus on higher-profile opportunities, according to Gamasutra.

Guitar Hero was originally developed by Harmonix in 2005, but Activision took over development after the second installment, as Harmonix developed rival IP Rock Band. To date, there have been six core Guitar Hero releases, the latest being Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, in addition to a number of mobile and side releases, including single-band titles built around Metallica, Aerosmith and Van Halen.
