King of Hip-Hop Asking Fans for Surgery Funding

DJ Kool Herc, known by many as the King of Hip-Hop, has expressed that he is in need of surgery and needs his fans’ help to get it.

Although Herc has been recognized by many artists and industry professionals as having an instrumental hand in creating the hip-hop culture as it is known today, he did not receive the financial dues that came with all the hard work.

Now, his health is failing and he doesn’t have insurance or the money to get the medical attention that he needs. To help him out, DJ Tony Touch has announced via Twitter that he will be fundraising for Herc at Sutra nightclub in New York City today. Touch and DJ Premiere have been using Twitter to raise to raise awareness and direct fans as to how they can help. As DJ Premiere tweeted, “For all donations for Kool Herc…send to: Kool Herc Production PO Box 20472 Huntington Station, NY 11746.”

Herc, born Clive Campbell, started DJ’ing parties in the late ‘70s but left the hip-hop scene after being stabbed at a party in 1977. In recent years he’s returned, and is once again active in the community he helped create.
