Last week, a tweet intended in jest to Detroit Mayor Dave Bing sparked an internet campaign to bring a Robocop statue to Detroit. Last we heard, fans had rallied behind the idea, setting up a Kickstarter page for the project, pledging to raise $50,000 to fund the statue.
The tweet that sparked the plan came from Mayor Bing, stating “There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop. Thank you for the suggestion.”
Well, the internet responded. To date, the Kickstarter campaign has raised more than $58,000, and artists have pledged to make the statue a reality. The Mayor’s office is still up in the air about whether the statue will be displayed on public land, but in the event it is not, a group of nonprofit artists have plans to make sure Robocop is there to serve the public trust and uphold the awesome.
