The Roots and John Legend Get Remixed

The Roots collaborated with R&B singer John Legend last year for Wake Up!, an album mostly featuring covers of soul songs from the 1960s and ‘70s with musical elements from gospel, reggae, rock and hip hop. And now, that album has gotten the remix treatment.

The resulting mixtape, titled Wake Up! Radio, was created by Brooklyn-based DJ, J. Period, who “dissects, remixes and rebuilds the original recording sessions from the WAKE UP! album in an unprecedented manner, defying the conventional wisdom of what a “mixtape” can be—producing a full-fledged remix album in the process.” The album also features guest contributions from Common, Pete Rock, CL Smooth, Q-Tip, Rakim and K’Naan.

An exclusive track featuring Legend, Roots MC Black Thought and Rakim, “In The Ghetto (Wake Up!),” will be released separately on Feb. 15 as a digital 12″.
