When Weezer was preparing to embark on its “Memories” tour last year, State Farm Insurance approached the band about recording a version of the company’s familiar jingle. You know the one: “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.”
Rivers Cuomo & Co. asked if the jingle was part of a whole song and if anyone had recorded it lately. The insurance company scoured their vaults for the answers and returned with the lyrics and music to the complete composition.
As it turns out, the song was actually written by a young Barry Manilow back when he was composing jingles for companies such as Band-Aid (“I am stuck on Band-Aid, ‘cause Band-Aids stick on me!”) to pay the bills, and to State Farm’s knowledge, the full song had never been recorded. After taking a look at the it, Weezer agreed to give it a go.
