Broken Bells Announce Meyrin Fields EP
Over the course of his career, prominent producer/multi-instrumentalist Brian Burton (AKA: Danger Mouse) has teamed up with a variety of indie-rock acts including Beck, The Black Keys and Sparklehorse. Everything up to this point, however, has been a one-and-done effort. So upon working with James Mercer to create Broken Bells, we figured that the partnership would turn into another one-off project. But perhaps things have changed for Burton, as they just have announced the release of Meyrin Fields later this month.... read more

An Appropriately Epic Dragon Age Retrospective
Kirk: I’m excited about Dragon Age 2, which is mostly due to the fact that I loved Dragon Age: Origins. I remember that before it came out, I was largely unsold on just about every aspect of the game. The graphics looked dated, the combat was dated, the story looked entirely unoriginal... and yet as I started playing I fell under its sway and sank a ton of hours into it, making my way across Ferelden and finally defeating The Darkspawn. Yes, the enemies in the game are actually called “The Darkspawn.” Shut up. It’s awesome.... read more

Radiohead: The King of Limbs
If Kid A and Amenesiac are “twins separated at birth," as Thom Yorke has suggested, then The King of Limbs is their cousin who comes to visit from out of town. He’s kind of odd, and no one really likes him at first, but once you get to know him, he’s actually a pretty cool guy. read more
Shameless Review (1.08)
This week, everyone’s working for a living—even Frank. The Gallagher household is financially on hard times, more than usual, and resorts to drastic measures. No diapers? No problem that a cork up the butt can’t cure. No toilet paper? Use streamers if one doesn’t mind a bit of chafing. It gets even worse when there’s a mix up on Fiona’s paycheck. Needing immediate cash, she resorts to working in a sports bar with next-to-nothing on.... read more

Dum Dum Girls: He Gets Me High EP
It’s hard not to fall in love at first listen with the Dum Dum Girls’ sexy clash of frail, melancholy innocence and sugar-sticky black-leather/red-lipstick rock ’n’ roll. “Jail La La,” the single from the band’s 2010 Sub Pop debut, __I Will Be__, is a near-perfect two-and-half-minute noise-pop confection—the aural embodiment of the girl next door dumpster-diving in the remnants of a black-lace gown after an all-night Four Loko bender. read more
Senso DVD Review
Director: Luchino Visconti Writers: Luchino Visconti, Suso Cecchi d’Amico, Carlo Alianello, Tennessee Williams, Giorgio Bassani, Paul Bowles, Giorgio Prosperi Cinematographers: G.R. Aldo and Robert Krasker Starring: Alida Valli, Farley Granger, Heinz Moog, Rina Morelli Studio/Runtime: Criterion/123 mins. Arguably the first movie that could be called Italian Neo-realist was Luchino Visconti’s Ossesione, which he then followed up with two more features in the same tradition. But as the war that fostered the movement faded into the past Visconti radically shifted his style with Senso. Where neo-realism focused on the poor, here he brought his spotlight to aristrocrats. Where neo-realism... read more
DeVotchKa: 100 Lovers
On the album’s first seven songs, DeVotchKa trades a bit of its international flavor for a sound more akin to glossy, modern New York indie pop a la Animal Collective or The Walkmen (excepting the accordion hook in “The Man from San Sebastian”). It’s a move that the band and producer/engineer Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Ladybug Transistor) execute extremely well, and a sound DeVotchKa has flirted with a few times in the past read more

Lucinda Williams: Blessed
Back in 1980, when she was just starting to find herself as a songwriter and singer, Williams chose to title her second album Happy Woman Blues; too bad, because that phrase perfectly describes her latest effort. Now trusting the sense of contentment brought on by a sustaining and sustainable long-term relationship, Williams has freed herself up to shift her focus outward, so that her acute sensitivity comes to bear on the plights of others, both those she holds dear and those whose personal tragedies she can only imagine—which is how and why this happy woman has the blues. read more
