Jay Reatard Documentary Premieres Next Month

Back in January, a series of posthumous Jay Reatard releases were announced, slated to come out sometime in 2011. One of those releases, a documentary entitled Better Than Something: Jay Reatard, will debut in April.

The film covers the life of the Memphis garage rocker leading up to his unexpected drug overdose in late 2009. Better Than Something primarily examines the last year of Reatard’s life and will include previously unreleased footage from his live performances as well as home videos. New York filmmakers Alex Hammond and Ian Markiewicz based the documentary off of their 2009 short film Waiting For Something. Watch the trailer below.

Better Than Something will initially debut in Reatard’s hometown of Memphis, Tenn. at the On Location: Memphis International Film & Music Fest on April 7-10, before making its way to The Nashville Film Festival on April 14-21.
