Salman Rushdie Writing New TV Show

Deadline reports that British-Indian novelist Salman Rushdie is writing for a Showtime drama called Next People, which explores contemporary American life.

Rushdie had already wanted to enter the television world, and his reps and literary agent began discussing the possibility. Eventually Showtime president David Nevins flew Rushdie to New York and tried to persuade him to write for Showtime. Rushdie then agreed to develop a show, and according to Deadline, the rumor is “he went straight to Showtime and didn’t shop the project to other networks.”. He will also be an executive producer with Working Title TV, a joint venture between NBC Universal and Working Title Films.

Rushdie acquired major attention after penning The Satanic Versus in 1988. His latest novel, Luca and the Fire of Life appeared in November.
