The Pet Shop Boys Prepare A Ballet

The Pet Shop Boys have turned their talents to the ballet, setting author Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale, The Most Incredible Thing, to music.

The British electro-pop duo worked with choreographer Javier De Frutos and playwright Matthew Dunster to create the ballet. The fairytale focuses on a competition, in which the winner gains half of the kingdom and, of course, the hand of the princess in marriage.

The ballet will open for a five-night run on March 22. The score for The Most Incredible Thing was released earlier this week in the U.K. via EMI.

“I would regard this project as part of a long career of putting pop music in a theatrical context,” Neil Tennant recently told Reuters in an interview prior to a preview of the work.

“We’ve always liked this thing of putting pop music in a theatrical context, really to make it more enjoyable. The theory is not very complicated: (it) is to make it more enjoyable and maybe to make you think about it slightly differently.”
