John Lennon's 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' Lyrics To Be Auctioned

John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics sheet for “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” will be up for auction.

The auction house Profiles in History told Billboard it expects the draft lyric sheet to fetch more than $200,000 when it goes on sale next month in Beverly Hills.

The draft contains the opening lyrics for the song and a rough sketch “of four people in a room with windows draped in curtains.”

Some people speculate that the lyrics are based on LSD after isolating the first letter of each word: ”(L)ucy in the (S)ky with (D)iamonds.” But Lennon dismissed these allegations, saying he hadn’t realized the letters formed that acronym until much later.

Lennon claimed the inspiration came from his son Julian, who drew a picture of one of his classmates, Lucy, when he was a child. He purportedly showed the illustration to Lennon and explained, “That’s Lucy in the sky with diamonds.”

A British woman named Lucy Vodden said in 2007 that she was the song’s source (she died in 2009).

The draft of the “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” will be auctioned on May 14 and 15 at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills.
