Michael Shannon Cast as General Zod in Superman Reboot

Director Zack Snyder has revealed that Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon has joined the cast of his forthcoming Superman reboot, tentatively titled Superman: Man of Steel. Shannon is set to play General Zod, a fellow Kryptonian and the central villain of the film.

“Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t,” Snyder said. “Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

General Zod, who was portrayed by Terence Stamp in the original Superman films, was a military commander on Krypton before the planet’s destruction. Possessing the same yellow-sun based Kryptonian powers as Superman, Zod is one of the hero’s most formidable opponents. Shannon, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Revolutionary Road, joins the Man of Steel cast alongside Henry Cavill, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, and Amy Adams.
