Speaking to Spanish site MarcaPlayer, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City producer Masachika Kawata said that Resident Evil 6 would be largely different from previous entries in the series.
“The series will see a complete renovation with the next entry on every level,” he said. “But we can’t forget about all the previous entries that have led to the creation of many possibilities for the franchise.”
This change is in response to the lukewarm reception of RE 5 in 2009. Over the years, the RE series has evolved from a purely survival-horror game to one much more action oriented, and this upcoming change is a response to the series’ crisis of faith. Kawata’s current project, RE: Operation Raccoon City, also sees a major overhaul in gameplay, shifting the focus to a squad-based human versus human conflict, with the zombie threat as a third party.
“I can’t say if we’re going to make [RE 6] survival horror or a shooter,” Kawata said, “but I can say that it’ll be totally new.”
