When a videogame franchise is successful, especially one with a world as sprawling and epic as Mass Effect, one of the first things considered is a film adaptation. Speculation has abounded about the possibility of a Mass Effect movie, with last word being that Lionsgate had acquired the film rights and the project was greenlit but still in development stages.
In a recent statement, Electronic Arts announced that BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect, has inked a deal with Japanese animation studio FUNimation to develop a feature length animated Mass Effect movie. No word on where in the storyline the movie will fall, if at all, but production has begun, and the project is slated for release in the summer of 2012, after the third installation of the game series has been released.
