Tom Hanks To Produce American Idiot Film

Tom Hanks will serve as producer for the film adaptation of Green Day’s American Idiot.

A year ago, Hanks expressed his interest in creating a film version of the album-turned-musical.

His dream has finally come true with Universal in negotiations for the rights of the movie. Michael Mayer, the director of the stage production, has been been hired to shoot the film and Green Day members will be co-producers with Hanks.

Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning writer of Milk, is slated to pen the screenplay.

The American Idiot album was released in 2004 and became a Broadway musical in 2010. Both earned Grammy awards.

Hanks and business partner Gary Goetzman were producers of the film adaptation of the ABBA song-based musical Mamma Mia!. Universal was the studio behind that project as well.
