At the 64th Annual Cannes Film Festival, which wrapped up on Sunday, writer-director Terrence Malick earned the festival’s most prestigious award, the Palme d’Or, for his film Tree of Life. The Palme d’Or, or “Golden Palm,” goes to the director of the best feature film of the official competition.

Tree of Life, staring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain, is an ambitious drama that follows a Midwestern family with three sons in the 1950s. It is set to release on Friday, May 27.

Other winners at Cannes include Kirsten Dunst for Best Actress in Melancholia and Jean Dujardin for Best Actor in The Artist.
