Stephin Merritt, the man of seemingly millions of songs, has some more unreleased and hard-to-find music to unload on his upcoming album Obscurities. The 14-song collection has rarities spanning Merritt’s career, beginning with tracks left off of 1994’s The Charm of the Highway Strip up to 1999’s 69 Love Songs.
The album includes lots of Merritt’s Magnetic Fields-era work but also features a number of pieces left over from his solo efforts. There are three tracks from an unfinished science fiction musical entitled The Song From Venus which he worked on with Daniel Handler, otherwise known as Lemony Snicket (author of the A Series of Unfortunate Events books). Single “Forever and a Day” is one of the songs pulled from the musical. The track is available for download here.
The album also features unreleased songs from his work on the audiobook version of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline. Merritt wrote the music and lyrics for the oh-so-creepy musical version of the novel back in 2009.
Merritt’s Obscurities is slated to be released by Merge on Aug. 23.
