David Wain Thinking About Wet Hot American Summer 2

David Wain Thinking About Wet Hot American Summer 2

Christopher Meloni may be leaving the Special Victims Unit, but he might have the opportunity to come back as the midriff-baring cafeteria worker in the sequel to Wet Hot American Summer.

The cult hit might be making its return a decade after its original release. Director David Wain is talking about bringing back the popular summer camp parody for a prequel.

It would take some work to harness the comedy squad together again. The original cast included Michael Showalter, Michael Ian Black, Paul Rudd, Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Christopher Meloni, Molly Shannon, Amy Poehler and Bradley Cooper.

Wain talked about his idea for a follow-up film during a Q&A discussion on the film’s tenth anniversary,

“The prequel would be the same summer so they would be 20 years old for the part yeah, but not younger,” Wain said. “So it would be 40-year-olds playing 16-year-olds. And yeah, we’re in the early stages of thinking about that.”

Despite the cult following behind the film and the praise at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, it wasn’t a huge commercial success. So when Wain asked Universal to do a 10th Anniversary DVD/Blu-ray release, they weren’t chomping at the bit.

“I told them we would be willing to do a new prequel teaser short for it and new interviews and new material but they were like, ‘No, nobody buys it. Nobody cares.’”

For anyone who needs a refresher or would just like to see Paul Rudd sloppily slobber on some girls, Wet Hot American Summer is on the Netflix instant queue right now.
