Once to Become Off-Broadway Production

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who make up the on-hiatus duo The Swell Season — perhaps best known for starring in 2006’s Once (the pair won an Oscar for best original song) — have written the music and lyrics for the film’s upcoming stage adaptation.

The off-Broadway production of the critically acclaimed John Carney film, which follows an Irish singer and guitarist and a Czech songwriter as they craft a relationship through music, will be adapted for the stage by playwright Enda Walsh. John Tiffany will serve as the director.

Once will debut as a downtown production at New York Theater Workshop in November, with hopes of eventually moving to Broadway. John Hart, one of the lead producers of the musical tells the New York Times, “Our first rush of enthusiasm was to go right to Broadway. I don’t think there’s any fixing to do, nothing specific, but we want to take our time and put it before audiences and critics at the New York Theater Workshop to get a clear sense of what we have.”
