With several outdoor concerts scheduled to hit the stage this summer, it’s easy for laid-back attendees to forget the amount of safety precautions that go into planning such large-scale events—until they save lives.
According to the Associated Press, the main stage at Canada’s Ottawa Bluesfest, one of the largest North American festivals, collapsed last night while Cheap Trick were performing. The result of an unexpected severe thunderstorm, winds began to pick up around 8 p.m. EDT, blowing through the show and immediately leveling the stage. The members of Cheap Trick were unharmed, but reports as to exactly how many others were injured are varied. This video from ABC World News Now is incredible, graphically displaying the stage’s horrific collapse.
ABC’s report below states that there was only one injury, but the network later updated their report to say that five people were hospitalized and then released. The Associated Press reports that there was also a spinal injury, and at least eight people were treated on the scene. On the other hand, CTV Ottawa reports that three people were sent to the hospital with minimal injuries.
