As reported by Variety, Dan Aykroyd is set to pitch a new Blues Brothers TV series to major studios and networks. Aykroyd and John Belushi’s widow Judy have, for quite some time now, owned the rights to the TV series while Universal has owned the film rights. The Blues Brothers’ last outing, in the 1998 sequel Blues Brothers 2000, didn’t have the quite the critical and financial success that the 1980 original film had received.
Judy Belushi and former SNL writer Anne Beatts have written the script of the pilot, which Beatts calls “Route 66 meets Glee.” Beatts has mentioned that each episode would feature a musical number if the pilot were to become a series. “I think these are great American characters,” said Belushi. “We want to keep them alive.”
