Kanye and Jay-Z Break iTunes Record

Everyone knew that Watch the Throne would sell plenty of copies. But Billboard announced today that Kanye West and Jay-Z’s collaboration not only made its debut on the Billboard charts at No. 1, but it also broke an iTunes record. The duo, known as “The Throne,” have sold the most copies of an album in a week on iTunes by moving 290,000 copies.

Watch the Throne was released Aug. 8 on iTunes—four days before it was released physically and through other digital retailers. Before the album was released, Coldplay held the iTunes record by selling 282,000 copies of 2008’s Viva La Vida Or Death and All His Friends. Watch the Throne, however, is the second-best selling album in a single week this year behind Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, which sold 1.1 million copies with the help of a $1 Amazon.com download. Watch the Throne is Jay-Z’s 12th No. 1 record.
