Scorsese's The Gambler Remake Creates Early Buzz

Though Martin Scorsese only announced his plans to remake The Gambler on Friday, the project is gaining a lot of buzz. Unsurprisingly, Scorsese wants to re-team with Leonardo DiCaprio for the fifth time since first working together for 2002’s Gangs of New York. Three of those films, Gangs, The Aviator and The Departed, have garnered Best Picture, Best Director and countless acting nominations. Scorsese seems to hope to replicate the accolades The Departed, which was a remake itself, won.

Not all seem excited about the project though. James Toback, the original’s screenwriter, felt “disbelief that [he learned] of these plans” via a phone call at 3 a.m. Paramount, the studio who owns the rights to the movie never informed Toback about the plans to rewrite the script that launched his career. The screenwriter phoned Deadline to discuss his feelings about it.
