The first trailer has been released for director Marc Forster’s (Monster’s Ball, The Kite Runner) upcoming action biopic Machine Gun Preacher, starring Gerard Butler and Michelle Monaghan.
The film is based on the real life story of Sam Childers, a former gang biker who once road with the infamous Hell’s Angels before having a religious conversion during a revival at his local church in Pennsylvania. Following his newfound sense of faith, Childers became aware of the plight of those living in the Sudan, which led him to make a trip to the region. After witnessing the chaos caused by the Lord’s Resistance Army, a violent sectarian and military group involved in the abduction of children and the destruction of villages in the area, Childers committed himself to helping the situation.
He established the Angels of East Africa Children’s Village for orphans of the local conflicts but took it a few steps beyond the usual by leading armed rescue missions for children abducted by the LRA. To date, Childers’ village is the only orphanage that does not move or retreat in the face of increasing rebel attacks or war, instead choosing to stand their ground and defend themselves.
The film is due for release Sept. 23 of this year. Watch the trailer below.
