In the wake of releasing their new YouTube Music page, the Google-owned video website has now resolved their four-year lawsuit with over 3,000 independent music labels. According to a report by Rolling Stone, YouTube has agreed to pay licensing fees to the National Music Publishers Association. In other words, these record labels will be invited to join the license agreement with YouTube and receive royalties from YouTube when their music is used in user-generated videos. Although each of the four major music publishers already have licensing contracts with YouTube, this deal finally catches the music industry up to the new ways of distributing and publishing music.
Only time will tell what this means for the lovers of streaming free music.Got news tips for Paste? Email news@pastemagazine.com.
