Donald Glover’s rap alter-ego, Childish Gambino, has quickly gained a large fan base by “making rap music for [those] white kids” (as he raps on “You Know Me”) with the use of indie-pop samples and lyrics referencing The Office and Tina Fey.
He has released three albums, two mixtapes and an EP all for free over the past couple of years before going on his I AM DONALD Tour this past spring. Show after show was sold out, with fans begging for new material.
Well, their wish is finally coming true. After signing to Glassnote Music (home to Mumford & Sons, Phoenix and Givers) a few weeks ago, his much anticipated Camp album received a Nov. 15 release date. Bootleg videos of Childish performing new songs at his Rock the Bells performance or an impromptu gig at the Bowery Poetry Club in Williamsburg last week left fans wondering when the first single would be released.
After releasing a snippet of “Bonfire,” Childish told his fans to tune into NYC’s Hot 97 last Friday to hear the debut of the song, where it was announced that the track would be released on Sept. 20 for download. Though it was an edited version, the first for one of the rapper’s songs, it was the first time hearing the studio version of a song from Camp.
Early this morning, Childish Gambino released the artwork for the single and is streaming the unedited album version on his site. At the time of this writing, the track has surpassed 7,200 plays.
In support of the album, he also announced a “pre-tour” that will take place throughout October and November.
