With Brett Ratner producing the 84th Academy Awards and returning to a supposed focus on comedy, the Oscars are bringing one of the world’s biggest comedians to host: Eddie Murphy.
With Ratner directing Murphy in the comedy Tower Heist, the choice makes sense. When Murphy does take the stage, it will be the first time since 1987’s infamous Raw tour that he has performed stand-up.
In 2007, Murphy was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as James ‘Thunder’ Early in Dreamgirls.
Two years ago the Academy got Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin to share hosting duties, while last year’s telecast infamously had Anne Hathaway and James Franco hosting together.
