According to Mashable, Facebook will be launching its rumored music platform next month, with an official announcement coming at the social networking company’s f8 developer conference on the 22nd of this month. Inside sources say that that Facebook won’t directly host any music themselves, but rather will depend on partnered services to provide content. So far, Spotify, MOG and Rdio have been revealed as launch partners for the service.
Rather than compete with existing music services, Facebook would instead function as a platform through which users can share the content of integrated third-party services, as they currently do with applications and games. Such a move would instead grow the userbases of connected services, giving them exposure to the over 750 million registered Facebook users.
The list of partnered services is expected to grow, as Facebook generally aims to integrate with as many services as possible rather than play favorites. Mashable’s sources also hinted at using the platform for media beyond music, such as the streaming of Netflix over Facebook.
