Last night, Radiohead singer Thom Yorke contributed a guest DJ mix to XFM’s “Music Response” radio show hosted by Mary Anne Hobbs. The compilation, dubbed “Money Back Mix,” lasted roughly 25 minutes and contained eight songs, about half of which were tied to Yorke in some way: Included were outside-party remixes of Radiohead songs and a song Yorke himself remixed.
One excerpt was identified as an original Thom Yorke collaboration called “Twist,” making it Yorke’s first solo song to emerge since he was touring with Atoms for Peace. Don’t expect a hark back to the song-oriented electronica of his 2006 solo album The Eraser, however: “Twist” features a nervous, skittery electronic beat with Thom Yorke’s voice saying “twist” and (what sounds like) “can’t” all cut up and spliced over it at an angular rhythm. It’s one of the most abstract offerings he’s put out to date — which is saying something.
Yorke is scheduled to DJ again Sept. 21 on the BBC Radio 1 show hosted by Gilles Peterson, so be on the lookout to see if he debuts further material.
