Marvel Studios might be taking Thor 2 in a different direction. Most of the directors that have filmed the Avengers solo films have been used to big-budget action films. Now, Patty Jenkins is reportedly in talks to become the director for Thor’s sequel.
Jenkins most notably helmed the critically acclaimed Monster, which won Charlize Theron the Oscar for Best Actress in 2003. Since that film, Jenkins has only directed four television episodes: one for Arrested Development, two for Entourage and the pilot for The Killing. She is currently filming a segment for a made-for-TV movie called Five. It will be an anthology of shorts exploring the impact of breast cancer.
She doesn’t necessarily have the traditional background for a superhero film director, but perhaps that’s exactly what superhero films need. When Joss Whedon signed on for Avengers everyone was excited because of his work on sci-fi-based shows. Maybe Jenkins will bring her knack for human emotions into the Marvel universe, which is what the comics so famously did in the 1960s.
