FINAL UPDATE (we think): Yep, it’s official — Radiohead is NOT performing at the protest, as the band confirmed on its Twitter page around 3:30. However, the hoax did help to draw a much larger crowd for the protest, and you can still catch the band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon this coming Monday. Occupy Wall Street’s website, which originally confirmed Radiohead’s appearance, is now also confirming it was a hoax. In other news, the protest organization will allegedly be joined by several prominent unions on Monday in hopes of strengthening the cause.
SECOND UPDATE: According to an email from an official representative of Radiohead, the band is officially not performing today at the Occupy Wall Street protest. People on the ground are still claiming it will happen, but we’ll see. Stay tuned for another update.
UPDATE: According to a post on Occupy Wall Street’s official website, Radiohead has been confirmed to play in support of the cause starting at 4 p.m.
According to a post by Gawker, rumors are circulating amongst those involved with the Occupy Wall Street protest movement, taking place right now in Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park, that a special musical guest will play in their support around 4 p.m. — and many seem to think it’ll be Radiohead.
Not only is Radiohead currently in New York, coming off the heels of performances on Saturday Night Live and The Colbert Report as well as two sold-out shows at the Roseland Ballroom, but it’s right up the band’s (and particularly Thom Yorke’s) left-leaning, anti-corporate alley. As one of the biggest alternative rock bands in the world, they could easily draw massive attention and support to the protesters’ cause — or, in the eyes of cynics, could wind up just drawing out a bunch of fans and pop-culture obsessives who have no real interest in the actual movement against Wall Street.
