Last Thursday indie folk rockers Deer Tick announced they would be putting on a free show in Brooklyn for tonight in response to “the unnecessary and unjust police brutality on the part of the NYPD against the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ peaceful protesters” during the weekend of Sept. 24-25.
Guitarist Ian O’Neil was in New York City last weekend when four women were pepper-sprayed and at least one woman was dragged across the ground. The members of Deer Tick were initially shocked and disgusted at the actions taken by the New York Police Department.
In a statement released by the band, Deer Tick asked that “the NYPD take responsibility for the unnecessary use of force that took place on Saturday, and requests that deputy inspector Anthony Bologna (aka Tony Bologna) face charges and is immediately dismissed from his position at the NYPD.” The deputy was filmed pepper spraying protestors.
We talked to band management, who stated, “Deer Tick hopes that the word-of-mouth spread by playing a very small and exclusive show will help draw attention to the unjust actions” from the previous weekend. Though there are no immediate plans for another show in response to the police brutality, Deer Tick management further added that the band “hopes that their fans will peacefully and non-violently spread the word about this unjust violence on the part of the NYPD.”
The show will take place tonight at Death By Audio, and the venue has asked fans not to line up before 8PM to avoid problems with the police.
