Dexter’s record-breaking sixth season premiere may have been its last. Star and producer Michael C. Hall’s contract is up at the end of the season, which is wrapping filming this week, and negotiations are at an impasse.
Showtime and Hall have been in negotiations that would take the series through two more years. The breakdown in communication all boils down to $4 million. Showtime has offered $20 million for the next two seasons, the equivalent to $800,000 per episode for Hall; while Hall and his representatives are asking for $1 million per episode which will total to $24 million.
Both deals would make Hall one of the highest paid actors, but money might not be a major factor in the negotiations. According to Deadline, Hall is tired of television and wants to move into feature films and Broadway.
The fact that the creator and writers do not want this to be the last season of Dexter means that there is more story to tell and that it is highly likely that there would be unanswered questions if the series does not return.
