Smashing Pumpkins have released another song through their record club. “Rhinoceros Version 2” was released last night. It’s an alternate take on the Gish cut, and it features one of the hokiest keyboard solos you’ve ever heard.
“We recorded two versions of the song Rhinoceros,” said Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan in a video intro to the song. “In one version, which the band considered the inferior version in hindsight, it has the standard ripping guitar solo. In the other version, which is the superior version, in classic Smashing Pumpkins humor, we thought it would be really funny to get Mark, the engineer, to play a keyboard solo. We didn’t actually have a real keyboard, so he used some sort of shitty keyboard.”
Corgan adds later: “Mark’s actually a pretty good keyboard player, but this was a marriage made in hell.”
You can take a listen to the song and see Corgan’s video intro by signing up for the Smashing Pumpkins’ Record Club over at their website.
