Yesterday the U.K. tabloid The Sun offered more or less definitive proof that Madchester pioneers The Stone Roses will reunite in 2012.
According to editor Gordon Smart, he was shown a text message from popular magician Dynamo, a close friend of Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown, on Friday night that said, simply and triumphantly, “We are going to rule the world again. It’s happening.”
This is the first time the influential band will reunite since their sudden breakup in 1996 after their sophomore album Second Coming flopped. In early 2010 Brown and guitarist John Squire were reported to have met in person for the first time since the split, spurring widespread rumors of a reunion.
Now the reunion is officially happening, as Brown and company just publicly confirmed a future Stone Roses tour in a press conference that just wrapped up in London, as reported by NME. Brown stated their main motive for reforming is to “uplift people,” adding that they plan to tour extensively: “We’ll ride until the wheels fall off.”
Two shows at Heaton Park in Manchester have been announced for June 29 and 30 in 2012. Tickets go on sale Friday at 9 a.m. U.K. time. The band has promised a subsequent world tour and new music to follow.
