British film director Ken Russell, famous for his Oscar-winning Women In Love and The Who’s rock-opera Tommy has died at the age of 84. His son, Alex Varney-Elliot, stated the director died at a hospital following a series of strokes.
Russell began his career directing for the BBC before hitting his stride in the 1970s with films that pushed boundaries. He continued his career as a director until he helmed a series of shorts and segments for longer film throughout the early 2000s, the last in 2006.
