An article published yesterday in the New York Post reported that The Smashing Pumpkins’ frontman Billy Corgan is interested in composing music for musical theater, specifically a Broadway production.
Corgan was most recently inspired to write for theater after attending a performance of Godspell at New York City’s Circle in the Square Theatre on Sunday night. He was allegedly wearing a lumberjack hat and accompanied by a blonde female.
In a subsequent interview with the New York Post, Corgan commented he’s not moving fully into the realm of Broadway and musical theater until he further develops his craft.
“I want to be a better songwriter before I try Broadway and I wouldn’t allow one of my old songs [to be used],” Corgan said. “If I do Broadway, I’m not coming to write three-chord rock songs.”
Corgan’s latest album with The Smashing Pumpkins, Oceania, is due out in early 2012.
