R.E.M.'s Peter Buck to Host Charity Music Festival

The members of the newly defunct R.E.M. have been adamant in asserting they will never reform and that the breakup is final, and singer Michael Stipe has even insisted he won’t be releasing a solo album — but guitarist Peter Buck isn’t ready to completely recede from the limelight yet.

According to a press release, Buck is preparing to stage the Todos Santos Music Festival in 2012 as a way to raise money for charities. More specifically, the event will take place throughout three weeks of January at the Hotel California in Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, Mexico. All proceeds will benefit the Palapas Society of Todos Santos, A.C., a foundation that works to help disadvantaged Mexican families by providing scholarships, educational programs and medical assistance.

The kicker: Buck himself is not only organizing and curating the festival but performing in every band on the bill. The guitarist has gathered together some of his musical friends and allies to perform with him, and each of the three weeks boasts a different guest. Aside from Buck, notable musicians who will perform include Robyn Hitchcock (The Soft Boys), Bill Rieflin (Ministry), Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows) and Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate).
