Oscars Announce Achievement in Visual Effects Shortlist

Recently the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the initial 15 considerations for the Achievement in Visual Effects Award to be presented at next year’s 84th Academy Awards. In January, they’ll narrow the list further and announce the final 10 nominees.

The list predictably includes visual effects heavyweights like Andy Serkis’ performance as the genetically enhanced chimpanzee Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the abundance of colorful and flashy wizardry in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and the multitude of baysplosions and CG robots in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, but also (questionably) includes the visually lukewarm Captain America: The First Avenger and the entirely lukewarm Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Check out the list below:

Captain America: The First Avenger
Cowboys & Aliens
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Hugo
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Real Steel
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Sucker Punch
Super 8
Thor
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
The Tree of Life
X-Men: First Class
