Denison Witmer Signs to Asthmatic Kitty

Denison Witmer is set to make his Asthmatic Kitty debut with his ninth album, titled The Ones Who Wait, on March 6. It was originally released in a limited quantity on Mono vs. Stereo last year, but Asthmatic Kitty took over the wide-release for the album.

A press release for the album said it “is an intimate reflection on the meandering path of life, on family and friendships, on death balanced with new life, on endings and beginnings.”

The Ones Who Wait started as a collaboration between Witmer and producer/ engineer Devin Greenwood who originally started working on an EP. But production for the songs came to a halt when Witmer’s father, who was diagnosed with cancer, started to get sicker, and Whitmer dedicated his time to his father instead of music.

“Those are months that I would never trade for anything,” Witmer said. “I stopped making music.  I stopped doing everything. I just spent time with him.”

Witmer’s father died a few months later, and the songwriter spent time grieving with his family. It was after this that the songwriter returned to the studio with a new outlook, and his EP of songs with Greenwood turned into an album.

The album includes CJ Camerieri (Bon Iver, Rufus Wainwright), Devin Greenwood (Norah Jones, Amos Lee), James McAllister (Sufjan Stevens), Charles Staub (Melody Gardot) and Rosie Thomas. Asthmatic Kitty expects to release a second part of the album this summer.

In other news, Witmer will hit the road in support of the album starting in February in Ann Arbor, Mich. You can check out Witmer’s website here, and see his tour dates below.
