Portland native Esperanza Spalding has resurfaced the face of jazz. When her career took off in 2010 with the release of Chamber Music Society, we did not expect her to snag the 2011 Grammy for Best New Artist out of the hands of Justin Bieber
all right, well maybe we did, but some of the public was left asking, “Who is this Esperanza Spalding?”
After topping Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart, booking Letterman and Kimmel, touring across the US, Europe, Japan and South Africa, gracing the pages of The New Yorker and O Magazine, and performing at the Nobel Prize Ceremony, the 27-year-old has nothing left to conquer—except a new album, of course.
Radio Music Society is to be released this spring and promises an even funkier flavor. There is no doubt Spalding will deliver just as she has in the past.
If you can’t wait until the spring, check out the video for “Little Fly” from Chamber Music Society.
