This Week In News
Welcome to our first installment of “This Week in News.” Chances are, you don’t have time to comb the internet on a daily basis for pop culture news, so here’s a weekly roundup of stories you might have missed otherwise.
Week of March 5, 2012
The Jesus and Mary Chain rescheduled appearances at 35 Denton Festival and their New Orleans show due to “work visa issues beyond their control.” The band rescheduled the Denton show in form of a free show, and moved their New Orleans show to Sept. 5.
Hilary Saunders caught up with Howler, who is working on a follow up to their fantastic debut, America Give Up. Frontman Jordan Gatesmith told Paste that the yet-to-be-titled album is “more like the Yardbirds, even a bit psychedelic.” The band anticipates the album will be out in early 2013.
Fiona Apple released her new album title, and it’s going to be a hard one to remember. The title is The Idler Wheel is Wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will Serve You More than Ropes will Ever Do. That’s 23 words by our count, so we’re guessing the album, which is expected to be released in June, will just be referred to as The Idler Wheel
Best Coast announced a new album, which sadly doesn’t feature frontwoman Bethany Cosentino‘s cat, Snacks, on the cover. The album is titled The Only Place and it’s set for a May 15 release on Mexican Summer Records. Sufjan Stevens and Rosie Thomas released a single for a forthcoming Record Store Day 7”, and we got our first taste from Stevens’ new project with Serengeti and Son Lux, titled s/s/s. Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom is set to open Cannes Film Festival.
Poor Moon, a new Sub Pop band that features members of Fleet Foxes and Crystal Skulls, released their EP, Illusion for download this week. Parks and Recreation filmed two alternate endings for its fourth season finale. Kristen Blanton caught up with Dr. Dog and Zale Schoenborn, the curator of Portland’s Pickathon Festival, to talk about Pickathon’s 2012 lineup. Adam Vitcavage spoke with Freelance Whales and Free Energy to discuss their forthcoming releases. Last, but definitely not least, Community celebrated its triumphant return in form of an animated web series. The show is set to return next week on March 15.
