This Week In News

As far as internet buzz went this week, the clear leader in news had to be the surprise announcement that Anchorman 2 is set to be produced. The announcement was made by anchorman Ron Burgundy himself on Conan O’Brien’s late night show. In other film news, a co-creator of Mad Men Matt Weiner is set to direct his own feature-length film titled You Are Here. The film is set to star Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis. Michael Bay crushed fanboy and fangirl hearts everywhere when he confirmed that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot would just be titled Ninja Turtles.

In music news, the week saw announcements for albums from The Tallest Man on Earth, The Walkmen and Smashing Pumpkins. We also saw videos from Caveman and Dum Dum Girls. But probably the weirdest news item of the week came from Flaming Lips, who said they’d be pressing the blood of their collaborators into their Record Store Day albums. Gross.

We were also sad to hear that bluegrass legend and three-finger banjo pioneer Earl Scruggs died at age 88 in Nashville. The death was confirmed by his son. Scruggs leaves behind a rich catalog and a huge influence on the modern use of a banjo, which was best known from his song “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.”
