For many, The Beastie Boys are the closest thing New York has to a house band, so it comes as no surprise that residents and lawmakers alike are getting creative in finding ways to remember the late Adam “MCA” Yauch.
Brooklyn residents are petitioning on Facebook to rename Brooklyn Heights’ Squibb Park, named after inventor and pioneer in the pharmaceutical industry Dr. Edward Robinson Squibb, after Yauch. The park is currently undergoing renovations to become a skate park.
On the Facebook petition’s page, it was Bikini Kill/Le Tigre frontwoman and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz’s wife Kathleen Hanna who pleaded for those signing the petition to throw their energies behind her husband’s effort to rename State Street Park instead, a stomping ground for Yauch as a child.
”[This] won’t hurt the [Squibb] family and it would be awesome to fix up the bball court there as a tribute,” she said.
Horovitz is working directly with the Parks Commissioner in the renaming effort.
