Watch a Trailer for Ubisoft's ZombiU

For a time when creative directors were faced with the challenge to develop a bloodthirsty plot for mature gamers, zombies were a go-to storyline. The overused genre does have a few success stories — Left 4 Dead, Dead Island and Resident Evil 4 — But much like the vampire, the motif has worn thin.

But Ubisoft hopes to prove fans of the genre wrong with their Wii U exclusive, ZombiU. With a few trailers and teasers released at this week’s E3, the game seems determined to smash the cookie-cutter genre into pieces, tape it back together, and smash it again for good measure. ZombiU‘s namesake refers to Ubisoft’s first project, Zombi, from 1986.

The game uses the new Wii U controller to its full advantage, serving as a motion detector, a sniper scope, a keycode pad, backpack and more. Also, if your character dies, he or she really dies. That’s right, no respawn. In fact, your new character has to kill your old character (who is now a zombie) if you want your old character’s gear. Kotaku has a laundry list of ZombiU’s capabilities.
