Watch Dogs Promotional Game Leaks 1,000 User Emails
Users who signed up to participate in the promotional world of Watch Dogs knew that the fictional universe centered around paranoia and hacks. They didn’t know that thanks to a slip on the dotconnexion Team’s part, they’d get a first-hand experience.
Ubisoft’s promotional alternate reality focused on the character Joseph Demarco, who owned the art gallery dotconnexion. According to Kotaku, the team sent out a mass email to participants with word on the unexplained demise of Demarco—and with it, exposed the email addresses of everyone attached. The email was not sent BCC, and receivers quickly became “tangled in a lengthy string” mass-replies and messages from strangers.
The mistake appears to only be affecting users with addresses beginning with early alphabet letters; Kotaku further reports that users with addresses beginning with I and M were not exposed.
